Comelec on the lookout for illegal campaign posters

Nobody makes a fool of the Commission on Elections when it comes to illegal campaigning.

The Comelec will be sending notices to candidates found to be violating rules on where campaign posters can be put up. Candidates will then have three days to take down the posters that are not in common poster areas or on private property without consent from property owners.

The Philippine Star reports candidates who violate rules on campaign posters “face an election offense, which carries a penalty of one to six years imprisonment, removal of the right to vote, and prohibition to occupy public office.”

With the campaign period for local elections kicking off this week, all candidates are now governed by Comelec rules.

“Remember when you just posted everywhere your propaganda materials even before the start of the campaign period since you are not prohibited? It is now our turn to be strict with regards to your campaigning,” Comelec chairman Sixto Brillantes said in the report.
