In the wake of Pope Benedict XVI’s announcement of his impending abdication, Reuters has drawn up a list of ‘papabili’ (potential popes). If the list holds true it may be time for a non-European to sit on St. Peter’s chair.
This may be only a possibility, as the about half of the voting cardinals are European, even though they represent less than a fourth of the world’s Catholics.
Included in the early list is 55-year old Luis Cardinal Tagle who became cardinal only last year. The Philippine Cardinal and current Archbishop of Manila, may not get on the final votes his cardinals do not usually vote relatively young candidates, ABS CBN News reported.
