Bicycle sharing is now in Manila

Good news, commuters. The Asian Development Bank just introduced the Tutubi Bicycle Sharing System, according to Interaksyon.com. With Tutubi, you now have access to bikes that you can use to reach the nearest MRT or LRT station—without owning them.

This project aims to support socially sustainable modes of transport and at the same time cut down people’s dependence on cars, cabs, jeeps and tricycles.

“A public bicycle sharing system is a network of publicly available bicycles throughout a defined area in a community whereby a user can take a bicycle from one location and return it to another location in the network,” ADB said.

Popular in France and Hanzhou, China (they have the largest system, with 50,000 bikes), the system charges an annual subscription fee which enables the rider to use a bike for free from 30 minutes to an hour. After that, there is an extra charge.
