Activists picket outside Malaysian embassy

Activists with Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) trooped to the Malaysian embassy in Makati on Wednesday protest reported abuse in crackdown on Filipinos in Sabah.

“Malaysia must stop the crackdown. It must stop targeting Filipino civilians,” the group said in a press statement amid reports of human rights violations by Malaysian security forces.

Bayan also said Malaysia should allow independent parties and foreign media to investigate the alleged rights violations as well as to offer humanitarian assistance.

Bayan secretary general Renato Reyes meanwhile scored Malacañang and the Foreign Affairs department for asking for proof of the supposed abuses. He said the government should condemn the abuses, call for an end to police and military operations, and look into the reported rights violations.

“Sadly, we have not heard any of these from Malacañang or the DFA. Affected Filipinos in Sabah are twice oppressed – once by the Malaysian government and another by its own Philippine government,” he said.
