Six injured in New Bilibid Prisons explosion

A grenade explosion inside the maximum security compound at the New Bilibid Prisons in Muntinlupa City on Friday morning resulted to six injured inmates and the suspension of visiting hours.

Senior Superintendent Conrad Capa of the Muntinlupa police said the grenade blast went off at around 5:55 a.m. in front of Building 11 of the maximum security compound. Investigators were able to recover the grenade’s pin and lever. Capa identified the injured as Jerick Piogino, Galvas Lastimoso, Romy Franco, Nilo Garin, Reynaldo Montemayor and Eddie Boy Joson.

“They were injured during a morning run. I was informed that inmates are allowed to jog from 5:30 in the morning around the maximum security compound,” The Philippine Star quoted Capa.

The police official stressed that they have yet to complete their investigation and determine if it was a targeted attack.  The National Bureau of Investigation, for its part, also called for a parallel investigation of the  grenade-throwing incident.
