The Department of Education will be testing a new system of declaring class suspensions in the National Capital Region (NCR) to ease the impact of the rainy season on millions of students.
According to ABS-CBN News, the new system will rely on the recommendations of “weather spotters” assigned by the different local government units. These people will in turn be trained on the basics of weather forecasting by PAGASA in order for them to give accurate assessments of prevailing weather conditions.
The weather spotters may recommend the suspension of classes within their area of jurisdiction even if there are no storms or typhoons. However, in the event that a storm signal is declared, the class suspensions rules under each storm signal will still be followed.
Major Reynaldo Balido, Jr., spokesperson of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said rain gauges will also be placed in some flood-prone schools to measure the total rainfall in those areas. Additionally, The NDRRMC has also distributed hi-tech inflatable boats to some LGUs in anticipation of the rainy season.
