Tondo residents can soon say goodbye to the dilapidated Diosdado Macapagal Tenement, the condemned 7-storey apartment building which has been there since 1963.
“According to Vice President Jejomar Binay, the National Housing Authority (NHA) will construct four five-storey buildings to replace the rundown tenement,” reports The Manila Times.
The new buildings, which the NHA hopes to be completed within a year and a half, have been dubbed the “New Vitas Low Rise Buildings.” Each building will have 240 apartment units.
According to the report, the former residents of the Diosdado Macapagal Tenement will be given first dibs on the units.
In 2011, some 570 families living in the deteriorating building were asked to move out. The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) had declared the structure “unsafe, high-risk, ruinous, and dangerous to its occupants.”
