New Bilibid Prison inmate escapes, manhunt underway

It’s a real-life prison break.

In the early hours of Tue, Dec 19, New Bilibid Prison (NBP) inmate Manuel Paril Jr. — who was convicted of homicide and frustrated homicide and is facing two rape charges — reportedly escaped.

“Records showed that Paril was supposed to be released this month after completing his sentence. He was previously released on parole, but was brought back to the NBP after violating its conditions,” reports Edu Punay in The Philippine Star.

Paril is considered second most wanted person in Quezon province. Although he was about to complete his sentence for the homicide and frustrated homicide cases, he is still facing two counts of rape in Gumaca, Quezon.

The report noted: “Initial findings showed that Paril was at the control gate when he broke an access door to the second floor of the administration building.”

Because of the escape, Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director Benjamin delos Santos declared a temporary lockdown of NBP. He revealed that they have started a probe to determine how the inmate was able to escape. At 6pm that same day, though, the lockdown was lifted after manhunt team failed to find Paril.
