Good news: no one got hurt.
Bad news: Fire hit the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City early today.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) told The Philippine Daily Inquirer that the fire started in the handicrafts area of the medium security compound.
National Bilibid Prison Supt. Gerardo Padilla stated that the fire spread quickly due to the dried leaves that were used for making baskets, CNN Philippines reported. No one was reported hurt, GMA News added.
The fire started at 2:58 am. In just 36 minutes later, it was raised to the fourth alarm. The fire was out at 8:40am, ABS-CBN reported.
An investigation is being conducted to find out what caused the fire.
The New Bilibid Prison is the Philippines’ main insular penitentiary located in Metro Manila’s Muntinlupa City. Rappler reported that in May, the prison housed 26,877 convicted criminals.
