President Benigno Aquino III has received the National Bureau of Investigation’s final report on the fatal shooting of a Taiwanese fisherman near Balintang Channel in Philippine territory.
According to a Philippine Star report, the NBI has recommended criminal charges against Philippine Coast Guard personnel involved in the incident. Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources personnel who were also on the MCS-3001, the BFAR vessel involved in the shooting, may also face charges.
Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said the NBI’s recommendations were not affected by pressure from Taiwan, which held its own parallel probe on the incident.
