National Historical Commission fails to buy El Hogar building

Last Jul 22, 2015, Coconuts Manila reported that the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) had plans to buy the iconic El Hogar building in Binondo, Manila.

Now, six months later, we are dismayed to find out that the NHCP’s plan to buy the iconic El Hogar building in Binondo, Manila, will no longer push through. According to a Philippine Daily Inquirer report, both the NHCP and El Hogar’s new owner — Ritz Premiere Corporation (sister company: New Golden City Builders and Development Corporation) — could not agree on the price.

The Inquirer quoted a source (who was not named) who explained that “the NHCP was had been planning to buy El Hogar from funds also coming from the Department of Budget and Management and, once renovated, it will supposedly become the new office of the said cultural agency.” However, the same source told the Inquirer about the NHCP’s failure to purchase the historic building. However, thye source did not specify the “steep price” involved.
