National Geographic Instagram photo depicts Manila wealth disparity

National Geographic posted a photo on its Instagram account yesterday showing a billboard for Camella home developments towering over a slum in Metro Manila.

The idyllic family scene in the advertisement cuts a sharp contrast to the flooded and trash-strewn shanty town below.

Renowned National Geographic photographer Jonas Bendiksen, who took the snap, recently released a book called “The Places We Live” documenting the slums of Caracas, Mumbai, Jakarta, and Nairobi.

Maybe now he’s working on something about Manila?

Interestingly, Camella is owned by former Senate President Manny Villar Jr. who was born and raised in Manila’s Tondo slum area.
