A 45-year-old widow working as one of the cleaners at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 returned a backpack containing PHP100,000 worth of cash and personal effects of an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) from Saudi Arabia.
Elena Abreo was the duty cleaner at the Customs arrival area of NAIA Terminal 1 last Sat afternoon, Jun 20, when she spotted an unattended backpack on top a baggage cart.
She said she waited for about 15 minutes for the owner of the bag to return. No one came back, however.
Abreo identified the owner by looking at the wallet which contained a driver’s license of a Samuel Fernando Aquino, resident of Asingan, Pangasinan.
She then used the airport’s public address system to alert the owner, who was about to leave the airport at that time.
Aquino immediately went back inside the airport to retrieve his backpack, which was said to contain over PHP100,000 worth of cash and personal effects.
Aquino rewarded Abreo with PHP500.
Abreo is a contractual employee of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA).
Abreo, a widow with five children, said she did not think of keeping the backpack for herself, adding that she believes in good karma.
“I know God is watching, and the owner worked for the money and equipment inside the backpack,” she said.
