OK, let’s try to be positive this time.
“The government is slowly moving towards the improvement of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) with the installation soon of the new DVOR/DME navigational system,” reports Raymund F. Antonio in the Manila Bulletin.
The report explained that “DVOR/DME, short for Doppler VHF Omni-Directional Radio Range and Distance Measuring Equipment, is the navigational guidance system that helps pilots locate and land on the runway during bad weather and low visibility.”
The new DVOR/DME system replaces the one that was installed back in 1996. With this new navigational system, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) “is aiming to prevent a repeat of the bogging down of the navigational system at the NAIA in June 2010, when airport authorities were forced to divert several flights to the Clark International Airport.”
CAAP revealed that the procurement of goods contract was awarded thru competitive public bidding to Indra Australia Pty. Ltd., in a joint venture with Philcox Philippines, Inc.
The report also indicated that “the winning bidder bagged the contract amounting to PHP39.8 million for the supply, delivery, and commission with flight check of the DVOR/DME system.”
