NAIA runway closed for 2 hours due to plane breaking down

The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) recently experienced “some excitement.”

“The NAIA’s Runway 13/31—which serves domestic flights—was closed to commercial traffic for two hours on Friday afternoon, August 22, after a Beechcraft plane broke its landing gear during an emergency landing,” reports Raoul Esperas on ABS-CBNnews.com.

According to Gen. Vicente Guerzon, senior assistant general manager of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), “the plane owned by CM Aero Services with registry number RPC 984 declared an emergency landing reportedly due to malfunctioning landing gear.”

The plane was loaded with fish cargo from Palawan and piloted by Capt. Sherwin Rala and Ronela Acuna.

The report noted: “The pilot dumped their remaining aviation fuel as standard safety procedure while fire and rescue personnel waited for the plane to land.”

Luckily, fire and rescue personnel were immediately deployed to the runway after the emergency call was relayed by the Manila control tower.

The plane, however, broke its main landing gear upon touchdown, but runway 13/31 was cleared of debris after two hours.

The report also added that “no flights were affected as adjacent runway 06-24 was used as alternate runway.”

Still, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is doing a probe on the incident.
