It’s OK now, but it wasn’t earlier.
“The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines on Friday, September 19, issued a notice to air operators that the Manila radar at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport malfunctioned as Typhoon Mario brought heavy rains to Metro Manila,” reports Philstar.com.
According to CAAP, the radar was down from 3:45am to around 12pm. This limited airport communications with approaching jets. As such, the report said, “only certain area navigation or RNAV-capable planes such as Airbus 319 and Boeing 737 could be allowed to land as runways are closed to other types of aircraft.”
CAAP deputy director general Captain John Andrews explained in a radio interview that “radar malfunction occurs occasionally, causing delays in the landing of planes.”
As of Friday afternoon, the radar was back to normal.
