NAIA’s main runway reopens after emergency repairs

It’s been fixed.

At 10:35pm on Mon, Jul 18, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport’s (NAIA) main runway reopened after it was closed since 4pm that day for emergency repairs.

Eric Apolonio, spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), explained, “There was a crack (on the runway). It was too damaged so they had to close it for safety reasons.”

“Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines had to cancel flights while some were redirected to the Clark International Airport. Several international flights were also affected,” reports ABS-CBN News.

 

 

The report noted: “NAIA has a second, smaller runway but it has no landing lights and cannot receive large jet-liners after sundown, airport officials.”

According to newly appointed Transportation spokersperson Cherie Mercado, affected flights included 53 from depature, 76 arrivals, with eight international flights and four domestic flights cancelled, and 22 flights diverted to Clark airport.
