NAIA brawl: Ex-congressman vs. present congressman

This happened late last week, but, perhaps, due to the stature of the people involved, it got reported later.

“On Thursday, Mar 6, Carlos Cojuangco, a former congressman of Negros Occidental’s 4th District, allegedly saw incumbent Rep. Jeffrey Ferrer, of the same district, at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) departure area and went out of his way to greet him,” reports Danny Dangcalan in Philippine Star.

However, former Pulupandan, Negros Occidental mayor Magdaleno Peña apaprently revealed in a press statement on Friday, Mar 7, that he was informed that “an altercation started when Ferrer only grunted at Cojuangco despite the latter’s gesture.”

Both camps refused to comment on the incident.

According to other witnesses, after what could be called a snub, Cojuancgo had walked away. However, he returned and reportedly told Ferrer, “Ang yabang mo (You are arrogant).”

Then, as the report noted: “Cojuangco reportedly hit Ferrer on the forehead with his boarding pass, to which Ferrer allegedly responded by punching the other man in the shoulder. Cojuangco and Ferrer reportedly continued to argue while they were walking through the passenger tube to enter the plane. They found out that they would be seated on the same row, only a seat apart. By then, the two had reportedly calmed down.”

The report added that “Ferrer’s name was on the manifest of PAL Express flight PR 903, which left NAIA Terminal 2 for Bacolod at around 8:20 am on Thursday, Mar 6.” However, Cojuangco’s name was not on the manifest.

In any case, there was reportedly another “congressional witness” on the scene: Former Negros Occidental 3rd District Rep. Edith Villanueva.

The report explained that Cojuangco and Ferrer “were former allies in the Nationalist People’s Coalition founded by Eduardo ‘Danding’ Cojaungco Jr., but reportedly cut ties when Ferrer supported Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. in his re-election bid in the May 2013 elections.” (Carlos is Danding’s son.)
