NAIA-3 ceiling collapses anew

Can this airport terminal still be called “world-class” after this?

Initial information from GMA News’ sources reveal that part of the ceiling of Terminal 3 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) collapsed on Thu, Jan 28.

As of 11am on Thu, Jan 28, GMA News tried to contact NAIA but had not yet gotten a reply.

This is not the first time that NAIA-3 ceiling has collapsed. This is actually the third time. The first incident happened in 2006 and the second one in 2008.

The video above, which was featured on GMA News in June 2015, shows the NAIA-3 ceiling riddled with cracks.

GMA News posted an update of the story at 11:46am, revealing that “the incident happened at the Sweet Ideas Restaurant inside NAIA-3” sometime past 7am.

In a statement, Dave de Castro, spokesman of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), said that “a 20-year-old construction worker Jellyboy Marcial was putting duct tape on an air conditioner cable when he slipped and had to cling to the ceiling, which caused debris to fall down near an area where passengers check-in.”

“Initial investigation shows that the materials used for the construction of that particular ceiling of the restaurant were weak,” De Castro said.

The report noted: “Passenger Lorna De Los Angeles, 59, had to get her blood pressure checked after she was almost hit by the falling debris. Airport personnel apologized to the passenger, who is now under the care of the NAIA medical clinic. The restaurant was closed after the incident.”

The MIAA management is still further investigating the matter.
