MWSS: No water crisis in Metro Manila

The Metropolitan Manila Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) allayed fears of a water crisis in Metro Manila.

MWSS Senior Deputy Administrator Nathaniel Santos, in a press conference on Thu, Nov 3, said that they don’t see a water crisis in Metro Manila the near future.

Earlier, a newspaper published a report saying that “water crisis” looms in Metro Manila unless a new source is built in the next four years

The report quoted a private water concessionaire saying Metro Manila faces a water crisis unless the government finds a source to supplement the Umiray–Angat–Ipo or Angat reservoir system.

“We don’t see a water crisis but there is an urgent need for us now to continue pushing for the full implementation of the Kaliwa Dam Water project,” Santos said.

The Kaliwa Dam, which is being eyed to augment Angat Dam, is expected to be completed in 2022 instead of 2020 due to project delays.

The construction of Kaliwa Dam at the Kaliwa River is expected to maximize the water supply, and t ensure short and long term supply for Metro Manila and its adjoining areas. It is included in the proposed New Centennial Water Source Project (NCWSP).

The NCWP aims to provide water security, reliability and additional supply for Metro Manila.  It is planned to be site specific, zeroing in on the Kaliwa-Kanan-Agos River Basin as an alternative water source. Philippine Information Agency (PIA)
