What’s important is that nobody is trapped in the danger zone if and when Mt. Mayon erupts.
“The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has no plan to lower its Alert Level from 3 to 2, despite decreasing number of rockfall events and recorded volcanic earthquake,” reports Nino Luces in Manila Bulletin.
Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum explained during the press briefing held at the Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office (APSEMO) that “although the number of recorded volcanic quakes and rockfall events have decreased, the vital signs of possible eruption within weeks are still there.”
“What is important is the activity inside the volcano, and essentially there’s a volume of magma that is again rising and degassing, that’s why we have low frequency volcanic earthquakes,” he said.
Solidum added, “We do not want people to relax or complacent in the seemingly lull activity of Mayon Volcano, because there were already examples of Mayon stopping and then exploding, of course there is a possibility of hazardous explosion.”
