Mt. Mayon evacuation: 10,000 families moving out of danger zone

Mt. Mayon, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, is showing signs of imminent eruption.

As such, police and military forces have been mobilized for full-scale mass evacuation of residents after Alert Level 3 was hoisted on Monday, September 3.

“More than 10,000 families are expected to be evacuated from the expanded seven-kilometer danger zone around Mt. Mayon,” reports Aaron Recuenco in Tempo.

The report noted: “PHIVOLCS raised the alert level to ‘critical’ for Mt. Mayon after recording within a 15-hour period an escalation of unrest, including 39 incidents of hot rocks falling in the summit area and 32 low frequency volcanic earthquakes.”

PHIVOLCS added that “molten lava and hot volcanic gases have made a glow in the 2,460-meter (8,070-foot) volcano’s crater observable.”
