Governments appear to have the power to declare mountains as sisters.
In a rather subtle marketing move to promote travel, the province of Albay and Japan’s Fuefuki City are scheduled to sign an agreement forging a sisterhood between Mt. Fuji and Mt. Mayon.
An Albay delegation and officials of Fuefuki and Yamanashi met to finalize the pact earlier this month.
The “fire and ice” partnership is meant to increase tourism in both areas. “Fire” pertains to Mayon, with its violent erruptions. “Ice”, on the other hand, pertains to Fuji, with its perennial snow cap.
Both mountains are active volcanoes surrounded by parks and other tourist attractions.
Fuji is a UNESCO site, and Albay was just declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the 4th World Congress on Biosphere Reserve in Lima, Peru.
So, we guess “fire and ice” tours will soon be a thing?
