On Tue, Feb 17, the Metro Rail Transit (MRT-3) experienced three incidents that either inconvenienced or hurt its passengers.
“The first incident happened at around 9 a.m. at the Santolan station, when the train suddenly stopped and caused passengers to fall over,” reports ABS-CBNnews.com. At least three passengers complained of being hurt, while the rest probably thought it was useless to even do so.
The second glitch happened at around 10am at the Magallanes station, where passengers were asked to get off the train.
According to MRT General Manager Roman Buenafe, these two incidents happened “due to the deployment of the trains’ automatic train protection (ATP) brakes.”
Buenafe further explained that “the ATP is a safety feature that is meant to protect the train in case there are problems such as open coach doors or if there is power fluctuation.” He added that “due to the age of the trains, some of the sensors that activate the ATP could have been dislodged.”
The report pointed out that “to avoid falling during sudden stops, Buenafe urged MRT passengers to hold on to the straps while inside the train.” He stated, “Hold on to the handstraps inside the train as an added safety precaution. But I will tell you right now, the handstraps are lacking. That is another improvement for my rehab plan.”
At 3pm, though, the MRT experienced another problem.
Passengers were forced to evacuate the train at the Boni Avenue station after what initially looked like smoke started emanating from the train.
The report noted: “Buenafe later clarified that the smoke was actually freon, and that nothing was burning inside the train.”
