More kariton classrooms for next schoolyear

Inspired by the “Kariton Klasrum” of CNN Hero of the Year Efren Peñaflorida, the Department of Social Work and Development (DSWD) and the Department of Education (DepEd) have launched an upgraded version of the lowly wooden cart for the benefit of out-of-school youths all over Metro Manila.

The K4 or “Kariton, Klasrum, Klinik, Kantin”, will be going around the city and giving lectures as well as other basic lessons to streetchildren. According to Education Secretary Armin Luistro, they have a separate curriculum for these pushcart classrooms. The stduents will also be integrated with the Modified Conditional Cash Transfer (MCCT) program of the DSWD.

According to ABS CBN News, each family can enrol up to 3 children each. The students will be receiving a P300 monthly allowance while their parents will get a P500 health grant. The families will also receive Philhealth memberships. The DSWD says 2,000 families are currently benefiting from the MCCT.
