A one-year-old baby is under observation at the Bicol Medical Center after being attacked by a monkey in Sipocot, Camarines Sur.

The mother said she left her son that day under the care of a cousin’s son, who owned a three-year-old pet Philippine macaque named Santi.

The monkey entered the house through the roof after its chain broke.

CJ Mendoza, who was asked to take care of the boy, was watching TV when the monkey attacked. He immediately ran out of the house and called for help after seeing the attack.

The baby boy sustained wounds on his scalp, nose, neck, back, and limbs from the attack.

According to the responding barangay tanod, the monkey was seen on a tree after the attack.

The monkey was killed while authorities were trying to catch it.

The Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) said the monkey should not have been killed as it still needed to be tested for rabies.

The parents of the victim will no longer file charges as the cousin has been helping them with the hospital expenses.

The baby has been given an anti-rabies shot and his wounds operated on. (from a report by Jonathan Mahistrado, ABS-CBN Bicol)
