A video of a mother crying inside a fast-food restaurant in Muntinlupa City has gone viral since first appearing on Twitter this past weekend. The reason? She learned her son was finally graduating from college, seven years after he started.
Liza Gay Marmol is the mother who teared up in the vid. She broke into tears after her son, Jerue Neuwell Marmol (@jrnwll), gave her a sablay, a sash a University of the Philippines student wears during his graduation ceremony.
In the video, Jerue can be seen presenting his mother with the sash, which was hidden inside paper and plastic wrapping. As she opened the package, Liza asked her son what was inside.
grabe di naman ako informed na mag-da-dramahan pala kami ng nanay ko tonight,,,, 🥺✨
planned a reveal for her para naman memorable sa kanya hahahahaha!! salamat sa 7 years na pag-ti-tiis. 😜

“What do you think that is?” Jerue asked.
“I think it’s a sablay. Are you graduating?” Liza asked. When her son gestured off-cam that he would, Liza burst into tears.
Since being posted, the touching video has been shared almost 2,500 times.
In an interview with Coconuts Manila, Jerue said he didn’t expect his mother to cry when he handed her the sablay on Saturday.
“I didn’t expect that at all. My parents are not emotional, especially my mom. I thought she would just be happy or say ‘congratulations,'” he said.
He also didn’t expect the video to go viral.
“Well, I’m not the type of person who shares stuff about my family online. But my mama had this genuine reaction at that moment and I can’t help but post it online. I didn’t expect anything out of my post, but I just wanted to make an appreciation post [for my mama]. I was shocked when it went viral. So many people related to that video and some even sent me direct messages,” he said.
“They said that they were inspired by what I have done for mama and told me about their own academic journey and congratulated me [for graduating].”
Jerue admitted that it took him seven years to finish college because he failed several subjects, such as algebra and economics. But as his college career comes to a close, he’s looking forward to taking a short break then pursuing a career in marketing or sales.
As for his mother, Jerue said Liza is pretty happy with her newfound internet fame.
Online, Filipinos were effusive in congratulating Jerue and Liza. @peachynatividad wrote: “We don’t know each other but your video made me tear up! Congratulations to you and your mom!”
