Mom and 5 kids who survived Yolanda die in tent fire

They survived Typhoon Yolanda, but they could not escape the fiery tent which became their death trap.

Maria Eliza Ocenar and her five children—Cathleen, 12; Justince, 9; Jasmine Claire, 5; Jovelyn, 3; and 4-month-old Jacklyn—died after their tent in Barangay Costa Brava in Tacloban’s San Jose District.

“Maria Eliza’s 7-year-old son, John Mark, is now fighting for his life at the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center,” report ABS-CBN News Tacloban correspondents Sharon Evite and Ranulfo Docdocan on ABS-CBNnews.com.

Maria Eliza and her five other kids had been rushed to the same hospital, but it had been too late for them.

According to the report, investigators have yet to determine why the victims did not manage to get out of the burning tent. An unattended gas lamp was said to be the cause of the fire.
