Outraged netizens took to social media yesterday to call for the resignation of pro-government influencer Mocha Uson after she spoke at a mass gathering of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Batangas over the weekend.
“We said hello to 322 of our OFWs in Matabungkay, Lian, Batangas,” the high-ranking official of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) said in a Facebook post that she shared on Saturday, which included photos showing people gathering en masse under an outdoor tent.
Uson said the event was part of a measure to check up on repatriated OFWs who have lost their jobs overseas.
“We continue to look for temporary accommodations for the large number of OFWs returning home. Up to 2,500 OFWs are coming home to the Philippines daily,” she said in English and Filipino.

However, netizens like Karl Rada were quick to point out that what Uson organized was a violation of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).
“Mass gathering isn’t allowed because of ECQ, and this violates the Bayanihan Act, but I guess Mocha Uson is different. She is knowledgeable of the law,” Rada said sarcastically.
“I’m okay with the idea that we are supporting our OFWs, but the mere fact that she chose to have a mass gathering. Where is social distancing?” another netizen named Alaine Ledesma Granado wrote.
Over at Twitter, people were more indignant, with users like @BabsMontalban1 tweeting, “This person and her cohorts will NEVER grow a Brain or develop a sense of shame but I’d still like to believe in Miracles… #MochaResign”

@JustGel_ was equally fuming and tweeted, “In all of Mocha’s snafus and breach of protocol, why was she never reprimanded? Unlike ordinary citizens who are arrested and fined by the police. To return the question that’s always being asked by DDS [Duterte Diehard Supporters], What is Mocha’s contribution to the Philippines? It appears there’s none.”
#MochaResign

Uson’s widely known snafus, which includes her propensity for spreading fake news, has led many on Twitter to use the hashtag #MochaResign. The former singer-actress was appointed to the OWWA post by President Rodrigo Duterte himself, a move that was met with deep criticism, to say the least.
Just last month, Uson drew the ire of netizens after calling Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto “childish” on her Facebook page for suggesting the use of tricycles to transport healthcare workers and patients during the monthlong Luzon-wide lockdown. She cleared herself from the online scandal by claiming that another administrator of her Facebook page supposedly wrote the controversial post.
