MMDA says flooding is inevitable, cites Metro Manila geography

We’re going to get wet no matter what we do.

“Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Francis Tolentino said flooding in Metro Manila is to be expected despite the declogging and dredging of 16 creeks and drainages in flood-prone areas in Metro Manila, where more than 1,124 truckloads of garbage and silt were collected,” reports Anna Liza Villas-Alavaren in Manila Bulletin.

Tolentino noted that “geographically, Metro Manila serves as a catch basin of water from the highlands.” He noted that “there are even areas in the metropolis that are below sea level including Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, and Valenzuela.”

Tolentino, however, assured the public that “all 54 pumping stations located across the metropolis are operational and have sufficient fuel.” He likewise “also appealed to residents to do their part by keeping the pumping stations free of garbage, saying that the stations’ delicate system will not work if they are clogged with garbage.”
