MMDA Chairman accepts dare to commute

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Francis Tolentino has accepted the challenge to commute to or from work at least once a month.

The chairman responded to an online petition from Change.org that dared government and cabinet officials, including the President, to take public transport on a monthly basis to have a better grasp of what it’s like for 80 percent of Metro Manila’s population.

The Change.org petition has gathered at least 3000 signatures so far. It is being headed by Dinna Louise Dayao, a communications consultant for the Inclusive Mobility Project.

Tolentino, who was a former mayor of Tagaytay City, willingly accepted the challenge saying taking public transport is not an alien concept to him. The MMDA chair explained that he took buses and jeepneys when he was still a student.

Earlier this month, he rode a bus at EDSA going to Ayala, Baclaran and the newly-inaugrated Southwest Terminal. So far, Tolentino is the only official who has accepted the challenge, the Manila Bulletin reported.
