Miss World Megan Young in Haiti orphanage collapse, holds on to crown during fall

This is, literally, grace and poise under pressure.

Miss World 2013 Megan Young managed to land on her feet and hold on to her Miss World crown when she fell after a temporary shelter for orphans in Port Au Prince, Haiti, collapsed on Oct 31.

Miss World chair Julia Morley wasn’t so lucky.

According to the Miss World website, 20 children on the second floor of the orphanage rushed to greet Megan when they saw her and caused the building to collapse. Megan was unharmed, but Julia Morley and one of the children, Jonathan, were hurt after falling through the second floor and landing 10 feet below and being hit by debris.

“We went into the orphanage hoping for a good day. I was happy that day and the children we were with seemed so full of energy and joy. We get onto this second floor platform, and we aren’t even there for a minute and we hear a crack and everybody falls through,” says Megan.

“We had all fallen down, but I was still on my feet. I had the crown in one hand and the other hand instinctively holding up one of the decks in place with two people. There were lots of kids under the decks still and we just instinctively held on,” she adds.

To Julia Morley and Jonathan, get well soon.
