Miriam told to respect the elderly by senior citizens group

Call it the War of the Seniors.

In her Dec 4 privilege speech, Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago repeatedly called her nemesis, Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile, “Tanda.” Santiago, who is a senior citizen herself at 68, was referring to the fact that the 89-year-old Enrile was a seasoned politician (to put it kindly).

Santiago’s “Tanda” taunts didn’t sit well with The Golden Eagles Society International, reports Hannah Torregoza in the Manila Bulletin.

The group, which is composed of senior citizens, is headed by 79-year-old former TV host Edgar “Eddie” Ilarde, who had also served as assemblyman, congressman, and senator in the past.

The report quoted Ilarde, who said, “While I have long been a fan of Senator Santiago, she seems to have forgotten the simple traditional respect for age in this country with her acid and mocking remarks by calling Senator Enrile as ‘si Tanda,’ clearly making fun of him because of his old age. Her derisive remarks about the advanced age of Senator Enrile also ridiculed the 10 million senior (citizens) in the country today. They deserve an apology from her.”

We wonder what she’ll have to say about this.
