Beginning June 1, water rates in Metro Manila will be either more expensive or cheaper, depending on which concessionaire serves your area.

“Effective June 1, 2015, Manila Water Company will reduce rates by 2.42% the rebased 2014 basic charge for the East Zone, following the approval and confirmation of the new rates by the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) Board of Trustees last May 8,” reports James Loyola in Manila Bulletin.

The report noted: “The reduction in the basic charge is in accordance with the decision rendered by the Appeals Panel on the arbitration case of Manila Water with the MWSS on the dispute notice that the Company filed in September 2013.”

That means that “the Appeals Panel set an 11.05% reduction in the average basic charge of PHP25.07 per cubic meter equivalent to a decrease of PHP2.77 per cubic meter.”

The new MWSS rates will be implemented in the following manner: negative PHP1.66 per cubic meter in 2015, negative PHP0.55 per cubic meter in 2016, and negative PHP0.55 per cubic meter in 2017.

For its part, Maynilad Water Services Inc will also implement on Jun 1 a net average basic rate hike of PHP1.35 per cubic meter.

The report explained: “Depending on their water consumption, Maynilad residential customers can expect a minimal adjustment in their water bills. Those consuming 10 cubic meters of less will see a PHP5.45 reduction, those using 20 cubic meters will see a P3.33 hike while those consuming 30 cubic meters will see a PHP21.57 increase.”
