Metro Manila LGUs get hazard maps

How timely: It turns out that today, Oct 17, is the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.

To mark the date, representatives of the local government units (LGU) in the Greater Metro Manila were at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Ortigas, Pasig City to receive hazard and risk assessment maps.

“The maps were launched through the Risk Analysis Project, a three-year collaboration of the Australian Government aid program with Geoscience Australia, the Philippines’ Office of Civil Defense, and other agencies including the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) and the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA),”reports ABS-CBNNews.com.

Officials from the Australian and the Philippine governments turned over around 87 maps for each of the 24 LGUs.

According to the report, “the detailed maps show information on population, infrastructure, and other area characteristics of communities to help authorities assess disaster risk.” Moreover, they also “indicate risks for disaster scenarios like earthquakes, typhoons and floods.”
