Meet the new PNP mascot: PO1 Bato

What is it with puppets and mascots that make them indispensable in the public relations strategies of government agencies?

On Mon, Aug 1, the Philippine National Police (PNP) presented “PO1 Bato,” their new mascot. As its name and appearance indicates, it (or should we say “he”?) was made to resemble PNP chief Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa.

PO1 Bato’s first official mascot gig was at Camp Crame, where he did a dance number. He also participated in a puppet show about the ill-effects of illegal drugs and the consequences of drug use. Of course, the Tatay Digong puppet was also there.

A GMA News report has identified the man behind PO1 Bato as PO2 Lawrence John Fernandez.
