McDo VS Jollibee: Which heartbreaking ad made you cry more?

The competition between these two fast food giants is not limited to food alone.

Jollibee released a series of heartbreaking commercials just in time for Valentine’s Day. Romantics promptly shared the tear-jerkers on Facebook, and they went viral within hours. We were pretty impressed, too!

One of the videos is called “Vow.” Spoiler alert: It’s a love story that didn’t happen between best friends who first met in Jollibee.

The guy immediately fell in love with the girl after they ordered the same thing: Chicken Joy, extra rice, and pineapple juice. Eventually, the girl married another man, but as the hero of the story said, “I want you to be the happiest girl in the world, even if we didn’t end up together.”

It is reminiscent of the 2009 McDonald’s commercial featuring the Eraserheads song “Ang Huling El Bimbo.” The storyline is pretty much the same, except there was no wedding yet. This one banked on the element of nostalgia.

So, what do you think is the subtle message here? A guy who always brings a girl to a fast food chain stays in the friendzone? Buying someone fried chicken and fries is a valid way for guys to express love?

One thing remains clear, though: Filipinos love good food and a good love story — and brands who use this winning combination win big.
