On Mayor Abby Binay’s orders: Drug war to include posh Makati villages

Because drug problems affect people from all walks of life.

On Wed, Jul 20, Makati Mayor Mar-Len Abigail “Abby” Binay ordered the local police to conduct operations in the city’s posh villages as part of the campaign against illegal drugs.

“Makati police chief Senior Superintendent Rommil Mitra had reported that no drug pushers and users had surrendered from the city’s six exclusive villages — Magallanes, Dasmariñas, Forbes, San Lorenzo, Bel-Air, and Urdaneta,” reports Mike Frialde in The Philippine Star.

Thus, Binay issued the directive authorizing the implementation of Oplan Tokhang in the said villages. The operation involves police officers personally visiting the homes of suspected drug pushers and users and asking them to change their ways.

Binay has likewise called on the residents and barangay officials in the six exclusive villages to “help police in identifying known drug users and pushers in their communities.” She said, “The war on drugs can only be won if we cooperate with the police.”

It’s worth noting that Barangays Bel-Air, Dasmariñas, Forbes Park, San Lorenzo and Urdaneta reportedly submitted to police certifications signed by their respective barangay chairmen that there were no drug pushers and users monitored in their villages.

To date, 734 suspected drug pushers and users in Makati have surrendered to authorities.
