After three months of continuous eruptions, the alert level on Mount Mayon was lowered one notch today by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), indicating “decreased tendency” towards hazardous eruption.

There had been a “decline in the intensity and frequency” of ash and lava emissions, Phivolcs said.
The alert level was lowered to 3 from 4, which meant that a hazardous eruption was imminent.
Over 60,000 people have been evacuated from areas around the volcano since it started to emit ash and lava in January, but officials have not yet cleared residents to return home.
