While state militaries around the world have been using drone technology for several years now, the Philippine’s Maute terrorist group have shown that they are not far behind in technological capability.
In a report on GMA News, a video was released of Maute terrorists flying a drone while chanting what sounds like “Allahu Akbar.”
It is not yet clear what that particular drone was being used for, but Joint Task Force Marawi Lt Col Jo-Ar Herrera said the military first saw that the Maute using drones as early as the first week of the clashes.
“During the first week of the skrimishes, we saw that the enemy had been using drones. This is part of their surveillance intelligence,” Herrera told reporters in Filipino.
Earlier today, military officials announced that they aim to put an end to the four-week battle that has killed at least 300 people and left 40,000 others displaced by this weekend, in time for the Eid al-Fitr holiday.
