Masbate town vice mayor shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Manila

The vice mayor of Batuan, a town in Masbate province, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Sampaloc, Manila this morning.

Vice Mayor Charlie Yuson III was having breakfast at an eatery on V.G. Cruz Street in Sampaloc with two companions, Wilfredo Pineda and Alberto Alforte, when the ambush occurred at 8:45 am, The Philippine Daily Inquirer reports.

The three unidentified suspects arrived in the crime scene in a silver-gray van with the plate number ACM 8804, according to ABS-CBN News. They fled towards R.M. Boulevard after shooting the victims, who were then brought to the University of Santo Tomas Hospital by concerned bystanders.

Pineda and Alforte are still at the hospital undergoing treatment. The Manila Police District is investigating the crime to identify the perpetrators and establish the motive for shooting the victims, Manila Bulletin reports.

Yuson is the 20th local government official killed since President Rodrigo Duterte assumed office. Other victims included Vice Mayor Alexander Lubigan of Trece Martires town in Cavite, who was killed in July 2018; Mayor Mariano Blanco III of Ronda town in Cebu, who was killed in September last year; and Mayor Alexander Buquing of Supiden town in La Union, who was killed in October.
