Marikina’s Public Information Office says not only did the city have no Typhoon #MaringPH casualties, an early distribution of doxycycline prophylaxis to around 2,500 residents also prevented a leptospirosis scare. The disease, common in tropical climates, is caused by bacteria that are spread through the urine of infected animals. Heavy rains enhanced by the monsoon left seven out of 16 barangays in Marikina’s riverside communities submerged in flood waters for days. Residents were temporarily housed in evacuation centers.
