President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. will be sworn in as the Philippines’ 17th president at the National Museum in Manila on June 30, his camp announced.
Incoming Presidential Management Staff secretary Zenaida Angping confirmed that preparations are already in full swing for the inauguration, adding that “the building and its surrounding areas match our requirements for President-elect Marcos’ inauguration.”
Marcos won the May presidential election by a landslide, receiving nearly 58 percent of the vote, or over 31 million ballots. He was proclaimed the winner by Congress on May 25.
Although Marcos Jr. would not be the first president to be sworn in at the National Museum, his venue choice likely speaks to historical ties with his father: Marcos Sr. was senate president when the building was still home to the bicameral Congress in 1963.
The National Museum was still the old legislative building when Marcos Sr. padlocked the building in 1973 and abolished Congress with the passage of the 1973 Constitution amid Martial Law.
According to Marcos Jr.’s camp, the president-elect initially planned to take his oath at the Quirino Grandstand, the same venue where his father was inaugurated, but the area surrounding the grandstand is still being used for COVID-19 field hospitals.
