Mar Roxas says ‘spliced video’ of meeting with Tacloban mayor is misleading

Can video clips lie? Well, according to Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Mar Roxas they can.

“On Tuesday night, Dec 10, Roxas said a short YouTube clip showing him talking to Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez is trying to deceive people,” reports ABS-CBNnews.com.

The report quoted Roxas’ statement, wherein he pointed out: “This spliced video conveniently hides the truth. Let the truth come out. Tigilan na ang panlilinlang (Stop the deceit).”

Roxas was referring to the video clip uploaded by a YouTube user identified as “Josemari Gonzalez.” The said clip, which is only 18 seconds long, shows Roxas saying “You have to understand, you are a Romualdez and the President is an Aquino” before it is cut abruptly.

The report notes that “the Tacloban City mayor is married to former actress and current councilor Cristina Gonzales, a daughter of former actor and politician Josemari Gonzalez.” ABS-CBN-News tried to get in touch with the YouTube user to confirm his identity but the user has not responded.

However, there is a longer video of the meeting between Roxas and Romualdez, which was uploaded on YouTube by user Cito Beltran.

The report explained: The 42-minute unedited video’s audio is garbled at the start but in its [6:58] mark, Roxas is heard to say, ‘You have to understand, you are a Romualdez and the President is an Aquino. He is being very careful in just taking over because he doesn’t want anything to be misconstrued.’

Around the 7:17 mark, whoever was holding the camera got told off by a lady that taping the proceedings was not allowed.

In any case, what’s more alarming here is that around an hour was wasted by Mar Roxas asking for a letter from Romualdez, while people were literally dying of hunger or wounds brought about by super typhooon Yolanda.
