Administration standard bearer Mar Roxas confirmed on Fri, Sep 18, that he has asked Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo to be his running mate in next year’s elections.
Roxas said he has started “formal and informal” talks with the widow of the late Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo on becoming his running mate.
“May proseso na. Kung baga magaasawa ka, may proseso, mamanhikan ka, hihingin yung kamay ng nais mong maging asawa so may pormal na proseso,” said Roxas.
Robredo has been insisting that she has no plans to run for vice president, unless the Liberal Party (LP) runs out of options.
On Friday, Robredo admitted she promised Roxas that she will think about the offer.
“Formally, inoffer na sa akin ‘yung posisyon. Sinabi ko ‘yung lahat ng agam-agam, sinabi ko kung bakit ayaw, sinabi ko ‘yung lahat ng problema kung bakit sa palagay ko hindi pwede… ‘Yung pakiusap lang sa akin, buksan ko ng konti ‘yung bintana at ang hinihiling lang naman sa akin, pag-isipan. Nagpromise ako na pag-iisipan ko,” she said.
She also said her children are against her going for higher office, and that she would like to focus on reforms in Camarines Sur instead.
“Sabi ko sa mga anak ko, itaas na lang namin, ipagdasal namin. Kasi kung ano naman ang nararapat, ‘yun ang mangyayari,” Robredo said.
For Roxas, Robredo is a firm believer in “daang matuwid,” the same platform that he wants to continue should he win the presidency.
“Ang masasabi ko lang po na si Cong. Leni, to the bones, nananalig sa daang matuwid,” he said.
“Kanya-kanyang sakripisyo, kanya-kanyang tulong, kanya-kanyang ambag para nga maitaguyod natin ‘yung daang matuwid,” Roxas added.
