There are 14,000 passenger jeepneys in Manila — and the least-disciplined drivers are in Tayuman, Pritil, Pedro Gil, Lambingan Bridge and Quiapo.
That’s according to Manila Vice Mayor Isko Moreno, who had a face-off this morning with Zenaida Maranan, spokesperson of Fejodap, an association of jeepney operators and drivers, on GMA-7’s TV program Unang Balita.
Fejodap started a strike at 5:30am. They are protesting increase in oil prices and alleged harassment by traffic enforcers.
For his part, Moreno explained that Manila has a “one strike policy” wherein corrupt enforcers are fired immediately. Some 40 traffic officers have been fired since the policy started, according to Moreno.
The problem, says the former actor-turned-politician, is that jeepney drivers have gotten used to not being displined the past two decades.
