Manila slammed for revised truck ban, resets to February 24

Due to protests, Manila is holding off on implementing the daytime truck ban.

“The Aduana Business Club Inc. (ABCI), an organization of importers, exporters, licensed brokers and truckers, openly criticized the measure, saying the group had been opposing it since the council hearings,” reports Erika Sauler in the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

In fact, as the report indicated, “ABCI president Mary Zapata warned of economic repercussions and called it a form of political suicide on the part of its proponents.”

Nevertheless, Manila “reset the implementation of the city’s revised truck ban to Feb 24, saying cargo moving companies would be given two weeks to make necessary adjustments.”

Under Ordinance 7570, eight-wheeler trucks will be banned from traveling in the city of Manila from 5am to 9pm. However, trucks carrying perishable goods and aviation fuel will be exempted from the truck ban.

The violators of the daytime truck ban will be fined PHP5,000 and will have their vehicles impounded.
