Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada orders local officials to undergo drug testing

The day of reckoning for Manila’s local officials has come.

Following the bloody anti-drug operation in Quiapo, Manila between a barangay chairman and authorities, Manila Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada has ordered all local officials to undergo mandatory drug testing.

In a report by GMA News on Sun, Oct 9, Estrada confirmed the new directive.

“Yes, we will do that… From barangay chairmen down to the barangay kagawad (councilor), there will be no exemptions,” Estrada said.

“It is a betrayal of public trust. People elected them. Do you think they are worthy of their positions if they’re drug addicts?” he asked.

Estrada also emphasized that anyone who tests positive for illegal substances will be automatically dismissed, as stated in Executive Order 292 or the Administrative Code of 1987.

Those who will test positive will also face criminal and administrative charges.
