Manila marked the fifth year anniversary of the Quirino bus hostage tragedy with a Buddhist ceremony on Thu, Aug 27. Buddhist monks from Hong Kong were invited by the local officials of Manila to conduct the ceremony.
In 2013, as indicated in a Reuters report, Manila had issued a resolution requiring a yearly observance and commemoration for the victims of the hostage-taking.
On Aug 23, 2010, a disgruntled former Philippine National Police (PNP) officer named Rolando Mendoza hijacked a tourist bus whose passengers were tourists from Hong Kong. Eight tourists were killed in Mendoza’s encounter with the authorities.
The eight people who lost their lives were Ken Leung, Doris Leung Chung-see, Jessie Leung Song-yi, Wong Tze-lam, Yeung Yee-wa, Yeung Yee-kam, Fu Cheuk-yan, and Masa Tse Ting Chunn.
