The local government of Manila has intensified operations against illegally parked vehicles, as well as vendors and pedicab drivers who obstruct traffic in major roads.

Among the areas cleared were United Nations Avenue, Taft Avenue, and the service road along Plaza Salamanca.

City officials also went after pedicabs and tricycles illegally waiting for passengers near Light Railway Transit (LRT) stations.

Drivers who parked illegally along the highway, and street vendors were also apprehended.

The operation was led by Vice Mayor Isko Moreno, who admitted that the local government is having a hard time managing the traffic situation in the city, which is worsened by ongoing road work in the area.

Moreno said around 30 vehicles are clamped down every day, despite the city’s no-parking policy along major roads.

“Ang dami namang parking area dito. Pero ang problema, ayaw maglakad o tinatamad. Hindi naman pwede ‘yon,” he added.

Aside from Taft Avenue, other roads used as “parking lots” by vehicles are United Nations Avenue, Lawton, Mendiola, Morayta and San Miguel. The illegally parked vehicles often obstruct the flow of traffic in these areas.

According to Moreno, they will continue monitoring violators, as well as install additional closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to apprehend motorists who do not follow the law. (from a report by Niko Baua, ABS-CBN News)
